Construction Missions

For more than twenty years, we have gone to Baja California, Mexico, to build alongside our neighbors.

What we have built

More than twenty years ago, Hana began going on construction missions in poor neighborhoods of Baja California. Since then we have built:

  • Bunk beds for families who were sleeping on dirt floors, as many as 70 to 80 beds in a single three-day trip
  • A rehabilitation center
  • Shelters for people leaving prison
  • School buildings that also serve as churches

In all, more than fifty buildings.

How we build

We bring recycled building materials from the United States. We teach construction skills to local workers. Small churches work together with us, and some of them have gone on to start programs of their own.

What we have learned

Two sayings grew out of these trips:

  • “Work is prayer.”
  • “Give, and then forget that you gave.”

Every generation

Children brought the coins they had saved for the mission. Some of the children who grew up on these trips now come back as young adults to build with us.
